HISTORYCampPerryisnamedinhonourofOliverHazardPerryherooftheBa2leofLakeErieintheWarof1812andhasbeenhomeoftheUSNRAsNa1onalMatchessince1907.HavinglearnedsomehardlessonsintheSpanishAmericanWarinCubain1898theUnitedStatesdesignedariesimilartotheSpaniards7mmMauserstoreplacetheKragJorgensenthattheAmericanshadfoundinade-quateowingtoitslowmuzzlevelocitysinglelockingluganddicultyinreloadingquickly.Oneoftheconse-quencesoftheredesignoftheriebuiltattheSpringx1feldArmorywasagreaterex1eec1verangewhichrenderedtheOhioNa1onalGuardsNewarkrangeobsoleteandindeedunsafe.Soanewrangehadtobefound.Bythe1meofCampPerrysconstruc1onUSCongresshadenactedTitle10oftheUnitedStatesCodein1903partofwhichcalledforAnannualcompe11oncalledtheNa1onalMatchesandconsis1ngofrieandpistolmatchesforaNa1onalTrophymedalsandotherprizes.Forthex1frstthreeyearstheywereheldaSeaGirtNewJerseyunderthedirec1onoftheNa1onalBoardforthePromo1onofRiePrac1ce.In1907AmmonB.Critchx1feldspowersofpersuasionresultedinthosematchesmovingtothenewlyconstruct-edCampPerrywheretheyhaveremainedeversince.Critchx1feldservedasOhiosAdjutantGeneralforsixyearsandhadoverseenthedevelopmentofthenewfacilityaersurveyingallofnorthernOhioslakefrontinthesearchforanewtrainingcampforhisfellowOhioGuardsmenaswellasothermilitaryandcivilianshootersfromacrosstheUnitedStates.HeiscommemoratedbytheCritchx1feldTrophy1934astoneobelisk1936andbytheCritchx1feldCircleseestreetsignoncamp.TheinauguralmatcheswereconductedinAugustandSeptember1907andcon1nuedun1ltheUnitedStatesen-teredWorldWarIwhichputastoptocompe11onin1916and1917althoughtherangeswereusedformarks-manshipinstructortraining.ThematchesreturnedtoCampPerryin1918andagainfrom1920un1ltheonsetofWorldWarIIaeraoneyearmovetotheUSNavysCaldwellNJfacilityin1919.1920sawtheaddi1onoftheSmallArmsFiringSchoolwhichtrainedthousandsintheskilleduseofmilitarysmallarmsincludingmanywhosubsequentlysawac1oninEuropeandthePacix1fcinWWIIaswellasotherswhotrainedthosewhowouldserveonthefrontlineintheirstead.WorldWarIIbroughtchangetoCampPerryincludingtheconstruc1onoforderlyrowsof14footby14foothutsx13latertobecomeforsomeanimportantpartofthevoluntarilyhousedcompe11veshootersCampPerryexperiencex13whichwerebuilttocontainItalianswhowereshippedthereforinternmentin1943aswellasGer-manprisonersofwarwhostartedtojointhemsoonaertheAlliedforceslandedinFrancein1944.Inaddi1onin1954thefourmajorrangeswerenamedinhonourofmembersofOhios37thInfantryDivisionwhowereawardedtheCongressionalMedalofHonorforcourageaboveandbeyondthecallofdutywhenx1fgh1ngtheJap-anesex13PrivateRogerYoungPFCFrankPetrarcaTechnicalSergeantCletoRodriquezand2LtRobertViale.Be-causeofaclericalerrortheiandtheainVialesnameweretransposedandfor36yearsshooterswrotex1cVaileRangex1dintotheirscorebooks.AertheerrorwasdiscoveredVialesson-thenColonelCharlesViale-cameandspokewhentherangewasrededicatedin1990.AlthoughtheNa1onalMatchesstartedupagainin1946withpistolandsmallboreeventsatCampPerrytherangeswerenotavailableforthenextthreeyearssotheywereheldatsitesaroundthecountryun1ltheNorthKoreaninvasionofSouthKoreacausedthe1950matchestobecancelled.In1951thematcheswereagaincon-ductedbuttheydidnotreturntoCampPerryun1l1953wheretheyhaveremainedeversince.CAMPPERRY
